From the vastness of space directly to the Munich Show

Meteorite Expert Meeting

August 22, 2025

The meteorite experts' meeting has been a fixture at the Munich Show for many years. Led by Dieter Heinlein (DLR meteorite expert) and his wife Gabi, visitors can once again expect a lively mix of hot news from the meteorite scene, exciting background information, and an inviting atmosphere that offers space for discussion and questions. This year, two special cases will be presented at the experts' meeting:

Highlight 1: The Haag meteorite (“Hammerstein”)

This year, the spectacular Haag meteorite, better known as “Hammerstein” (pictured), is a particular focus. On October 24, 2024, it entered the atmosphere as a bright fireball and broke into several fragments that fell in a scattered field near Haag (Lower Austria). One piece even pierced the roof of a house – the first documented “hammer fall” in Austria. A total of around 151 grams have been recovered so far, including the 64-gram main mass. The meteorite belongs to the rare group of LL chondrites and has a complex, brecciated structure that provides unique insights into the history of the solar system's formation. Thanks to the rapid recovery, scientists now have access to material that is virtually unweathered. With its extraordinary discovery story, the Haag meteorite has also attracted international attention and is already considered one of the most significant finds in recent years. Since June 2025, the first fragments have been on display at the Natural History Museum in Vienna, where they enrich the museum's traditional meteorite collection.

Highlight 2: A new iron meteorite from Baden-Württemberg

In addition, another meteorite will be presented to the public for the first time: a small iron meteorite that was discovered by chance in Baden-Württemberg. The classification has already been completed, but official inclusion in the Meteoritical Bulletin is still pending. At the Munich Show 2025, visitors to the expert meeting will nevertheless be able to take a look at the results of important investigations and marvel at the cut original find in a display case. This will give guests an exclusive insight into a meteorite that has yet to be officially named.
